Kellan. – Why Am I Like This [Interview]

Describe your sound in 3 words

Facetious Paranoid Bangers

Why am I like this, is a ‘doorway into the darker side of your anxiety-ridden mind’. What is the story behind your last song?

The song comes from a corner of the mind that is half frantic confusion, and half exhaustive investigation. The titular lyrics “Why Am I Like This”, is both “why does my brain and emotions work the way they do”, and “why is it happening to me”. It’s hopelessly rhetorical, and yet, I think we’re all looking for that answers.

We all have things we hate about our conscious, and we all have insecurities, frustrations, or annoyances that really make no sense from a logical perspective. Whether it’s social anxiety, relationship problems, self-destructiveness, selfishness, a lack of empathy, hating your body—whatever. It’s the part therapy where mindfulness meets the wall of “ok, I get this is a trick my brain is playing on me, but what the fuck, I’m still falling for the trick”.

For which lyric you are most proud of?

Now I hate, that I hate, my reveries of better things
The guilt-ridden pity party, did you RSVP?

Artists and people who have influenced and inspired you?

For this song? Slug, Patrick Stump, Kanye, and Robert Delong

What does hip hop symbolise in your opinion?

Hip-hop is an entire culture. It’s not just the music, and it’s not just the art. I think hip-hop is a massive collection of people, community, and expression. I am just part of one branch of hip-hop—I rap. Hip-hop is a symbol of culture.

You are doing very well on Spotify. What advice would you give on new producers?

As much as it sucks, you have to focus on marketing. It’s not fun. It’s not, flat out. It’s work. But, if you’re serious about spreading your music, getting fans, and have an ultimate goal in mind—no matter what that might be—as a musician you have to market yourself. Play to your strengths. I suck at networking, but, I’m great at the internet. So I use it.

One last thing we should know about you?

I’ve never had a cavity, and I rarely floss. Boom. Mic drop. But also, follow me on instagram for crazy shit, antics, and producer tips. @kellanrad on Instagram.

Chip Pirrs – When In Rome [Interview]

Describe your sound in 3 words

Angsty, Lush, Spacious

What is your creative process like? Tell us a few things about your new work and how it differs from your previous tracks.

My favorite part of the whole music making process is the initial construction of the idea in the form of the musical track. So usually start there, playing with different sounds until something sticks out to me. I used to complete the entire process in my home studio from track to vocals. Now I have a collaborator, and once I have a song in raw but understandable form I take it to his (Josh Valleau, The Glass Wall) studio and we work through it. My newer tracks are on new level now that there’s someone to help.

For which lyric you are most proud of?

I think I’m proudest of being able to make the last part, of When In Rome, a bop. I was happy with how those lines turned out and sounded on the track.

Do as the Romans do.. What is the importance of adaptation?

My whole life people have said to me, When in Rome you do as the romans do, meaning when you’re in someone’s else’s element you should act like they act. Take their example. So I used that idea as an excuse for a guy coming home after being on a trip with his friends. It’s like, “it’s not my fault how I was acting out at the club or wherever. I was with my friends I was just fitting in with what everyone else was doing.”

Your music has a lovely experimental touch. Should music as a form of art always challenge the listener?

I’m not sure any art should always do any one thing. I know that I really enjoy when a complex song unlocks for me and I understand what the artist is doing. It’s an enriching feeling for me and I feel like after it happens my understanding of art as a whole deepens.

Favourite music related film?

Purple Rain

What would you say is your biggest vice?

Music. I spend more time listening to music than anything else.

Thank you!

Onbar – GOOD [Interview]

Good has a vivid feel good factor and will put the listener in a great mood. Tell us a few things about it.

It definitely has those vibes! I think what helped was the fact that it was made in San Diego, CA. Beach vibes and perfect weather birth this track!

You finished the song in just two days. We were wondering, what is your creative process like?

When I landed in the studio, I had a chord progression I came up with the day prior. I think what made the creative process so smooth and fast was due to how open I was to the ideas being introduced. Working with others helped me come up with new ideas!

For which lyric you are most proud of?

“I’m not playin’ around, I’ll make you feel GOOD!”

What do you enjoy most? Writing music or performing your music live?

I think I enjoy both equally. With writing, I get this rush when I come up with dope melodies and lyrics to go with it. With performing, I am moving and singing in a way that’s natural.

What would you change in the music industry?

I want to inspire people to be themselves and create the music they want to create. I know what it feels like to not be validated for my sound, so I hope I can encourage people to grasp their deserved validation.

In which state of mind do you imagine people might listen to your music?

It can range from chill to heart broken hours.

When was the last time you danced?

The last time I performed my music 🙂

Thank you!

akilbeatsdenver – Intrinsic [Interview]

Describe your sound in 3 words

healing, energizing, smooth

Each song of intrinsic is titled after a vitamin. What is the story behind it? Tell us a few things about this album.

#musicismedicine is the mantra for the project. music has an interesting and powerful way of helping the brain retain information. i can recite rhymes or sing songs that i was introduced to decades ago. because of this unique aspect of music, and my desire to help healing, i was drawn to the idea of the project being nutritional for the mind body and soul. i imagined conversations around songs by using their title, either sparking curiosity, “where do i get/what’s the importance of thiamin” or subconsciously increasing a desire to be aware of what we ingest, without it being too directive.

Is music a form of healing?

absolutely, in a way that’s very unique, it changes brainwaves, and even cymatics shows that there are physical properties to sound that can create order and harmony.

We really loved the beats in this album, really chill and smooth. We are wondering, which is the best broken beat you wish you had composed yourself?

firstly thank you so much for taking the time to listen, i really do appreciate it. there are so so many, what immediately came to mind was havoc of mobb deeps’ “trife life”. it never gets old and the way the filtered loop of the song “you are my starship” by norman connors creates that muddled bassline is just hypnotic.

What does hip hop symbolise in your opinion?

it’s an expression of the voice of the unheard or unseen, and has morphed over time into the predominant global forefront of culture and individuality.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

bet on yourself, no one is coming to save you, no one has your best interest in mind more than you do.

One last thing we should know about you?

i’m really proud of this project, i am going to continue to create of course! i’m also focusing on placements for movies, tv shows, commercials, content. the vibe of intrinsic is one that i think works well for visual media as background or definitive. i’m excited to see where this journey takes me, i already feel accomplished by being vulnerable and giving a chance for the world to hear my compositions. if someone can listen to intrinsic and it improves mood, or get an extra hour of study in, a couple more miles on the bike trail or finally finishing the dishes and laundry, accompanying drinks by the fire or daydream music on a long drive to the mountains, i will have completed my mission!

Thank you!

Recess Villains – Ciao Bella

In the midst of the catastrophe that was the Summer of 2021, Recess Villains was formed. The Los-Angeles based hip hop group consists of “goth-pop” artist Swim from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and rapper Juice Judah from High Point, North Carolina. The duo released their first single ‘Britney Spears’ in 2021. While their first single touts their international pop star aspirations, their second single ‘Ciao Bella’ confirms it. Recorded in Cervia during the duo’s first trip to Italy, ‘Ciao Bella’ is a trap rock song with glitchcore and rage rap undertones. To produce the track, the duo teamed up with Italian artist Zo Vivaldi, an acclaimed Italian songwriter who has written for prominent Italian artists such as Fedez and Dark Polo Gang. Vivaldi grew up between Milan, Shanghai, Los Angeles and Cervia and currently resides in Milan. After recording the single, the trio went to Milan to shoot the music video for it with Italian Director Davide Papadia. The track was co-produced by AMACWTHASAUCE, mixed by Vivaldi and the bourgeoning Italian Soul/R&B artist Moonet, and mastered by Grammy-nominated songwriter, producer and engineer Rob Kleiner. ‘Ciao Bella’ synthesizes the rage of missed opportunity, with the fierceness of an urgent hustle, and smooth pop melodies into a blend and energy that is distinctly Recess Villains.

Dorian – Proud [Review]

Dorian, the artist from Baltimore, keeps the momentum with another release, a professionally crafted love song titled Proud, which can be characterised by its feel good factor. Dorian is the kind of artist that writes music that can be defined as personal and honest. Lyrically, the artist admits emphatically that believes in love, resulting in an uplifting track with very positive vibes. The backing track has a very cool retro touch with 80’s infused, classic synth arpeggios. The instrumental is enriched with a refreshingly groovy beat which has a classic hip hop/rnb feeling, making it a perfect fit for your next, commercial, dj friendly mixtape. Dorian is not new to us. You can read more about the artist here.

L3o – 1969 [Interview]

Describe your sound in 3 words

The futures in

Tell us a few things about 1969. What is the main idea behind it?

A really interesting piece. The prism changes from what you can usually hear, and it’s always good to find a new source to draw from when looking to feed on aesthetics as ambitious as the one presented here. The piece lives very well and carries the colors of an ambitious music.

Which is your most personal and honest lyric?

At the end of my song Blue Skies: P.T.L.L.

I hope I’m lucky
most kings die young still at rookie
So I’m chasing demons
Hope the lead me to a place in Eden
Where angels and devils dine together every season
No reason pastor tweaking screaming
Cause I’m speaking treason
Take me to the deacon or the flames
Witches burnt at the stake suck little games but whose to blame
Why can’t good and evil be Leo
God The father son and spirit me as a trio
And I hope you don’t take that line outta context cause it’s way to complex for you to understand
Jesus was the first rockstar and I’m a fan
Let my light guide you there Alex in wonderland

In your album you blend different styles from pop to soul. What do you listen to in your personal time?

Jimi Hendrix The weekend Kendrick Lamar
Russ Chomp 2

What would you change in the music industry?

For Artist to get paid more from there steams on platforms

If the music of 1969 was in the end credits of a fim, which film would that be?

The Batman

Tell us a few things about your new song SAD BOY. What is the story behind it?

It’s a very old song where I started flipping a tango sample and it went through many mutations, the track is essentially the “Hell” section of the album.

Which is your most personal and honest lyric?

“Momma was mugged on the streets for her coat”. In Bogota, my hometown, shit was wild, and I saw my mom go through that and I was a naive kid not even processing what was happening

What is your opinion of hip hop nowadays? Do you think the audience is tired of listening to the same generic trap beat again and again?

To some yeah but to others it works. That’s why it sells so well, people putting their own unique spins on things will always receive attention and I believe real talent is recognized

What does hip hop symbolize in your opinion?

To me Hip Hop means authenticity and overcoming your pain and making something great from it

It is ok to feel sad. But what is the one thing that makes you sad?

The thought of losing my loved ones

One last thing we should know about you.
