Alba Rose – Holding On [Interview]

Describe your sound in 3 words

Ethereal, authentic, fun

Tell us a few things about your new song “Holding On”. What is the main idea behind it?

‘Holding On’ is a track that goes through the multiple emotions involved when learning to let go of someone or something that you’re not yet ready to. It goes through the highs and lows of a relationship and accepting the uncomfortable reality of a situation, playing between optimism and hope, and cynicism and doubt. This was my sophomore release, prior to the release of my debut EP ‘Silhouette’, which is a 4-track body of work ?

What first got you into music?

When I was in high school and I auditioned to be in the school musical. My audition went terribly, I forgot all the words but my music teacher thought I had a good voice so set me up with a vocal coach. After a few sessions with her I caught the bug and then started performing in school shows and community events, and that was in my final two years of school, so around 201

What do you enjoy most? Writing music or performing your music live?

Hmmm I like both these aspects of music in different ways, and go in and out of enjoying one more than the other at different stages of the year. At the moment I have been focusing more on the live sound aspect of music, so tours, shows and performing. I’m in a real roll with this, and am loving building my confidence up on the stage, yet I haven’t written music in ages, so am starting to get really excited about the idea of writing and producing some new tracks. With new tracks comes a new vision and project. That’s probably the most exciting thing for me right now, all the prospects of the new year and new tunes.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as an artist so far?

Covid-19. Its so hard to maintain the mental strength to keep going and continually back yourself when things are so unstable and unpredictable in the world. Its definaily a hard industry and career path to choose at the moment, as it feels like so much is pushing back against you, when things you love and things you want to do shoul just happen naturally and feel like they click. I know that all good things take work and time, so it the challenge has been learning to mitigate that time, and keep moving even through the doubt and unmotivated patches.

Which book should we read while listening to your music?

Ottolenghi’s new cook book please

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

oooo… I’d probably be hustling trying to earn some serious money so that I could go and explore the world, specifically Spain and South America. I’ve been longing to travel for years now, there’s so much I can’t wait to explore and experience

Thank you!

Mars Valencia – Nomads [Interview]

Describe your sound in 3 words

Spacey, chilled and relaxing

What is your creative process like?

I create the beat and melodies at the same time, while I’m working on the beat I’m also thinking about what melodies would work best and build the song as I go along. Once the rough demo is created I’ll take it to the studio and record it professionally.

For which lyric you are most proud of?

“I was doing road with the Nomads, vision never been so clear”. This is my favourite line because its so real and brings back so many memories from my time in China. I saw things that you would have to see for yourself to believe, I left the country incredibly inspired and my outlook on my music and career had changed drastically.

Do you think there is a true underground hip hop sound today?

yh of course, if you look for it you will find it, theres so much more music out there aside from what mainstream media feeds us, and usually underground music is better.

What does hip hop symbolize in your opinion?

HipHop is self expression, its unique to each individual which is why the genre of Hiphop is so vast and it continues to grow and push boundaries.

Favorite film ever?

The lord of the rings, God tier movie.

What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?

next question your honour

Bobby-G – Big Face Hunnids [Official Video]

Bronx-native Bobby-G has honed his craft for the better part of a decade with an unwavering passion for making music and telling his origin story. Starting his musical career at the Nuyorican Café performing spoken word at open mic nights, Bobby-G continues to find inspiration in the words of James Baldwin and hip-hop storytellers like DMX, Jay-Z, and The Notorious BIG.
“I want to be known as an artist first. Rapper second. I want to be known as someone who has a deep love for the craft and is dedicated to pushing the culture forward. My purpose in music is to identify the tangents in my life and connect them with societal issues to create a soundscape that helps people navigate through it all.”
Navigating the industry from a mindful distance while focusing on his career, Bobby-G is ready for his resurgence, and his new LP, Gawd Have Mercy, is a testament to that dedication.

“This project is for the dreamers, believers, and overachievers. It’s a love letter to a friend who passed before reaching his zenith and a way for me to connect his dream with the world. It’s for those of us who are looking for a second wind to actualize our goals. There are songs and mantras on the project that I hope will be used as reminders to help motivate anyone trying to realize their dream.
We are all in search of faith, and this doesn’t necessarily mean religion. Faith could just be finding someone close to you that you can rely on or seeing that someone else has similar experiences through their music.”
Gawd Have Mercy blends traditional and contemporary sounds in high-powered tracks throughout the first half of the project like “Big Face Hunnids,” and “Chariots of Fire.” Closing out the project with the soft, subtle tones of “Famous Nobody Pt 2.” Through seamless writing and production, this LP brings to life 13 new tracks that tell a cohesive and unique story of struggle, growth, perspective, and daydreaming.

DxBoY – Lit Again [Interview]

Describe your sound in 3 words

Energetic, Fun, Lit

How many beats do you listen to before you end up using one? Tell us a few things about your creative process.

Hmmm this varies to two ends of the spectrum. It’s either I use the very first beat I listen to or I spend 1-2 hours going through beats before eventually calling it a day and starting again tomorrow. So my creative process is first of all to get a beat that hits me from the very first listen. Once I’ve got this, then I freestyle over the beat because what comes to you naturally the first time is usually the best flow you’ll end up with. I then replace words in the freestyle, and that’s the process really

For which lyric you are most proud of?

” Cartier on my arm, you ever been with a star baby?”

What does hip hop symbolize in your opinion?

Hip-hop symbolizes freedom to me. A way in which you can express all the emotions you have without being judged. A sweet escape

Favourite album of the past year?

That would have to be “My Turn” by Lil Baby. “Emotionally Scarred” was definitely the best song of the year

What is the most useless talent you have?

I am amazing at Tetris. I can confidently wager 100 pounds against anyone that I’ll beat them.

One last thing we should know about you?

I’m just getting started and have a lot of new music coming out soon. A couple videos as well and maybe dropping an EP before the end of the year. So stay on the look-out.

Thank you!

Vai Sarmaria – Good Feeling [Interview]

Describe your sound in 3 words

Chill, calm and warm

Tell us a few things about your new song ‘Good Feeling’. What is the story behind it?

“Good Feeling” is a song that I wrote to express how I feel to be loved unconditionally when I received God’s love as a big part of my healing journey. This kind of love makes me feel secure, calm, peaceful, relaxed and content. Those are good feelings that I embrace. This song is supposed to give you comfort and relaxation which I feel is something that is very much needed at this moment in time.

Which is your most personal and honest lyric?

Not gonna lie, the whole lyrics from Good Feeling are personal and honest, but if I have to choose one part, probably the chorus…. “Come take my hand now and get closer to me, embrace me with your good and sweet love, it’s a good feeling”….. It expresses the whole story.

Artists and people who have influenced and inspired you?

Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Melody Gardot, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill and Lianne La Havas

What would be your dream performance venue?

Blue Note Jazz Club, New York

Which book should we read while listening to your music?

Hug Time written by Patrick McDonell

What is the most useless talent you have?

Psykobreak! – Sting [Interview]

Describe your sound in 3 words

Dark, Fresh, Agressive

Tell us a few things about your new song ‘Sting’. What is the main idea behind it?

‘Sting’ was inspired by Notorious B.I.G’s ‘Hypnotize’ but with a spooky, EDM-infused twist. It’s a sarcastic commentary on how rappers act and talk tough only to manifest negativity. It’s the theme song for the character and first performer on the track, BQ, in our web-series.

Do you like the idea of collaborating? Is songwriting a lonely process?

Love collaborating! This project is a collaborative effort for sure. The songwriting can be simpler if done by one person, but sometimes it’s nice to get others’ creative vision; they make can think of something that never even occurred to you.

Favourite album of the past year?

Our favorite album of 2021 has to be Halsey’s ‘If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power’. It’s such an unexpected collaboration with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross with really groundbreaking results.

What would you change in the music industry?

The fact that popular music today is determined more by TikTok hits than creativity. There are some awful songs from there.

Favorite music related film?

This project mostly started because of ‘Sucker Punch’ and its use of music. When the music starts, we look inside the character’s mind rather than a musical number and that’s the exact formula we’re using in our storytelling.

One last thing we should know about you?

We’re hard at work creating a Sci-fi/Horror/Comedy web-series featuring the performers on this song and others. It’ll be a never-before-seen combination of music and storytelling; keep you eyes peeled!

Thank you!

DreGarde – Twenty5 [Interview]

Describe your sound in 3 words

Authentic, Relatable, Vulnerable

Tell us a few things about your new work ‘Twenty5’. What is the story behind it?

Twenty5 is an audio autobiography of what I was going thru at the age (25) and the earlier part of when I turned (26).

I had family and family friends pass away
My mom wasn’t at her best health , my lady at the time just broke up with me plus I was in a state of transformation within myself.

So much was going on in my life at that time it was very overwhelming, when I heard the beat for “Goosebumps” that’s when the journey of creating Twenty5 started.

Now we here!

Which song of the album reflects you the most?

“Imperfections” I cried writing recording and listening to that song! It’s hard to not feel the vulnerability in it. Also Shoutout the homegirl Limbochildd for blessing me with vocals on that record she definitely took it to another level in my eyes.

Who is your favourite beat maker and which rapper’s flow do you enjoy the most?

I know y’all asked for one beatmaker but I have to give you two producers I’m sorry!!

Alchemist and Cardo got wings is my favorite right now and been for a minute.
to work with any of them would be an honor!

For flows off top Kendrick!
Many may not know of them but Le$ and GT also got flows that I vibe to heavy!

What does hip hop symbolize in your opinion?

The real. Real comes in all shapes sizes and voices. Of course there’s always gonna be some bullshit but at its core hip hop symbolizes the real.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Accept that you’re different from people but not better & embrace it there’s a reason some people don’t fit in. They’re supposed to stand out.

What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?

I was at a young lady’s house doing my thing back in my younger years and didn’t know her father was a sheriff well his ass came home and I tried hiding in the closet like a goofy lol that didn’t end well! I’m here to tell the story though so it’s all good in the end.

Thank you!

Natalie Nicole Gilbert – Recovery [Interview]

Describe your sound in 3 words

Fresh soul pop

Tell us a few things about your album ‘Recovery’? What is the story behind it?

All of us have been having to hit pause during the pandemic, and for most they’re also facing various injuries of some kind – lost time with family, lost jobs or work hours, lost opportunities to perform or travel – not to mention any hardships they’d been facing before the pandemic began. So I curated this tracklist of songs to soothe the listener – to remind them how strong they are even in their darkest hours. All of us have the ability to bounce back.

Which is your most personal and honest lyric?

Postcard is the most personal song on the album. I wasn’t sure I’d ever release it, since it’s a song about my dad passing. One of my collaborators who worked on it said it really spoke to him and resonated with him as he processed losing his own father, and to me that made releasing it worthwhile.

Artists and people who have influenced and inspired you?

I love people who are talented but also really make an effort to make a difference. Alicia Keys, Dolly Parton, Betty White, Matt McGorry, Justin Baldoni – the ones who really use their talent and their platform to reach people, speak up for those treated unfairly, and lend a helping hand. As musicians we always hope our music does that whether we’re in the room with that person or not, that our music can find them and reach them wherever they are now.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as an artist so far?

Biggest – hard to choose just one. The main one I had to overcome, which really drove this album, was being hit by a car years ago in 200I had to have a major hip surgery and learn to walk again, and even years later I still have to wrestle with health issues that may turn up as a result of the surgery or some remaining weakness on that side. We all like to think that when we face a difficulty we confront it and move on but some things stick with us or return later in a smaller way. Recovery is cyclical, it’s not always a straight line of falling down and immediately picking yourself up again. Sometimes it’s taking small steps and just being thankful that you’re moving at all, and remembering you’ll return to the bigger and faster steps down the line.

When not writing music, how do you spend your time?

I love to review books for #NetGalley and Bookstagram. I’ve also started working with wellbeing and skincare brands on my social media now that I’ve amassed a following of about 70,000 followers and fans across my social profiles. I’m also working on a novel presently which we’ve begun to pitch to publishers and literary agents, and we started getting some great response in the first week. I love to have multiple projects going at once in various stages, so there’s always a new place to pivot your energy no matter what stage a CD, novel, screenplay, or charity effort is in.

Future plans?

I have a new single releasing January 11, 2022 that’s a remake of a 90s French hit that also did well in America in its English adaptation back then. We’ve given it an updated sound but kept a lot of the passion of the original intact, so it will be fun to see that one circulate both with fans of the original and new fans who are too young to know the first version. Snow on the Sahara is live now on SoundCloud and BandCamp and will hit all the other music platforms January 11th.

Thank you!
